Practical

My essay was mainly based around Walter Benjamin's essay 'Work of Art In The Age of Mechanical Reproduction. I talked about how the ability to reproduce art could lead to the democratization of art; the idea that it can be within anyone’s reach, where every person has the right to engage in the arts. For the practical side, I decided to draw people engaging in making art:




In my essay I also discussed how the ability to reproduce art raises the issue of authorship and the uniqueness of a piece of art. Benjamin stated “that which withers in the age of the mechanical reproduction is the aura of the work of art.” - that art that was not intended to be mechanically reproduced in printed form, immediately loses its transcendent significance or “its unique existence” once it is removed from its physical and spatial context such as a cathedral, museum or gallery etc. I came up with the idea of reproducing popular works of fine art, whilst combining my earlier sketches to show this idea visually. Whilst looking for artworks that I could copy its style from, I came across an artist that has done a similar thing:
